The functional roles of the a disintegrin and metalloprotease with a thrombospondin type motifs (ADAMTS) gene family in reproductive physiology, reproductive organs developments and adult reproductive health are still under investigation. The expression of the anti-angiogenic proteases ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 in placental angiogenesis at various stages of pregnancy also remains unclear. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine the localization and expression of the ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 proteins during the three stages of pregnancy in rats. Maternal-fetal tissue samples were collected on Days 5, 12 and 19 of each trimester, corresponding to the first, second and third trimesters. The expression of placental growth factor (PlGF) and ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 at the maternal-fetal interface was examined using immunohistochemistry and western blot at three distinct phases of pregnancy. ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 were detected in all three trimesters of pregnancy. The relative amount of PIGF increased in the first trimester and decreased significantly in the third trimester (p < 0.05). The expression of ADAMTS-1 and ADAMTS-4 was significantly higher in the second (p < 0.05) and third trimesters (p < 0.01) compared to the first trimester. However, no statistically significant change was observed in ADAMTS-8 expression between trimesters. The ADAMTS exhibiting the highest expression during the first trimester was ADAMTS8. These findings indicate that the expression of ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 in the three different stages of rat pregnancy may be involved in the modulation of decidualization, morphogenesis and angiogenesis. Periodic changes in ADAMTS expression are thought to be regulated by gonadal steroids.

A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease Domains with Thrombospondins Motifs (ADAMTS), proteinases responsible for the destruction of extracellular matrix structures, have essential roles in the physiological and pathological processes of the female reproductive system, which is a dynamic structure. This study aimed to evaluate the immunoreactivity of placental growth factor (PLGF) and ADAMTS' (1, -4, and -8) in the ovary and oviduct during pregnancy in the first trimester. Our findings suggest a predominant role of ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 as proteoglycan-degrading enzymes from the ADAMTS-1 in the first trimester. As an angiogenic factor, PLGF showed more immunoreactivity than ADAMTS-1 in the ovary. This study provides the first evidence that ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-8 are more expressed in ovarian cells and follicles at different developmental stages during the first trimester of pregnancy than ADAMTS-1. Consequently, we suggest that ADAMTSs and PLGF act together and may exert specific effects on the formation, stabilisation, and function (or a combination thereof) of the matrix surrounding and protecting the follicles.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of 8-week exercise in Alzheimer's disease (AD) aged 65 and over through functional, cognitive, and biochemical parameters and irisin metabolism. METHODS: Two groups consisting of healthy individuals and diagnosed with Alzheimer's over the age of 65 were followed up with a combined exercise program of 45-60 min, 3 days a week, for 8 weeks. At the end of the exercise period, various cognitive and functional tests were performed on the participants, and blood samples were taken for biochemical parameters and irisin level measurements. RESULTS: In functional evaluations, while there was no difference in pre-exercise measurements of timed performance and quadriceps femoris muscle strength, there was a difference between groups in all other measurements (p < 0.05). Nutritional status increased significantly after exercise in AD individuals. Although there was an increase in mental score values after exercise, it was not statistically significant. Similar to the elderly with Alzheimer's, the improvements in functional tests in the healthy also led to improvements in activities of daily living and auxiliary activities of daily living. The exercise training did not have an effect on the lipid profile in AD patients, but showed an effect on glycemia and irisin levels (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Changes in functional, cognitive, and biochemical parameters after the exercise program improved quality of life in Alzheimer's patients.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition that requires multidisciplinary treatment. Vitamin K is an antioxidant that plays a role in many reactions in the body, and its effectiveness in FMS has not been studied before. AIM: We aimed to evaluate vitamin K levels in FMS patients and their relationship with pain, disease activity, quality of life, and inflammatory cytokines. METHOD: Eighty-eight female patients with FMS and 87 controls were included in the study. Vitamin K and inflammatory cytokine (interleukin-6 [IL-6], IL-8, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-alfa) serum levels were measured in both groups. Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), and Short Form-36 (SF-36) scales were used. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences in vitamin K levels between the two groups, and no relationships were found between these levels and pain, FIQ, SF-36, and inflammatory cytokines (p > .05). While IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels were found to be high in the FMS group compared with the control group (p < .05), no difference in IL-8 levels was noted (p > .05). In the FMS group, positive correlations were found between IL-6 and FIQ, and between TNF-alpha and physical role difficulty(p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results of this study do not provide any evidence of an association between FMS and vitamin K levels. However, high IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels suggest that low-intensity inflammation may accompany FMS and have a negative impact on physical activity. Future studies are needed to determine the relationship between vitamin K and FMS.

BACKGROUND: Oral glucose loading may affect oxidative status during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). We aimed to investigate how oxidant and antioxidant markers and thiol/disulfide parameters change during OGTT. METHODS: OGTT was performed to 42 volunteers who were considered risk of type 2 diabetes and were divided into three groups (normoglycemic, prediabetes, diabetes) according glucose levels during OGTT. Glucose, insulin, c-peptide, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), total thiol and native thiol were investigated with auto-anaylzer for five-hours period. RESULTS: Decrease of TAS and increase of TOS levels began with the increase in glucose and insulin levels. The increase of TAS started at third hour and reached the highest levels at fifth hour. OSI levels were higher at fourth hour than fasting and first hours in normoglycemic and diabetes groups. In the prediabetic group, TAS were higher than the other groups, TOS peak was at the second hour (p < 0.05). Native thiol and total thiol levels showed variable course during OGTT, both parameters increased at the end of the process (p < 0.05). Disulfide levels showed an increase trend but it was not statistically different in normoglycemic and diabetes groups. In prediabetes group, second hour disulfide level was lower than fasting state and disulfide was significantly increased at third, fourth and fifth hours and fifth hour disulfide level was also higher than fasting. CONCLUSION: Oxidative stress parameters and thiol/disulfide balance were found to deteriorate within five-hours after glucose loading in all groups. These results indicates that oxidative stress occurs during OGTT.

We aimed to firstly examine the effects of nutrition and exercise training on irisin, Sema-3E, biochemical and inflammatory parameters in obese patients. This study was conducted using 37 individuals were divided into three groups according to body mass index (BMI) as non-obese, 1nd degree and 2nd degree obese individuals. Nutrition and exercise training were applied to groups for eight weeks. Insulin resistance decreased in non-obese and 1st degree obese subjects. HsCRP values decreased only in the second degree obese individuals. Adiponectin values were significantly decreased in all three groups. There was a negative correlation between serum adiponectin and plasma irisin levels both before and after treatment. Sema-3E levels increased significantly in only the first degree obese individuals, whereas plexin-D1 values did not change significantly in any group. Our findings indicate that nutrition and exercise training we apply improved both anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters in obese and non-obese individuals.

Abstract While the role of cytokines in celiac disease has been investigated in detail, cytokine release in the event of the exposure of healthy subjects to glutens has only recently been studied. This study was aimed at determining the effects of corn and wheat glutens, incorporated as protein sources into the diet, on serum interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels and the immunohistochemical distribution of CD3 and CD8 receptors in the small intestine in male rats. The study material comprised 24 twenty-day-old male Wistar albino rats, which were randomly assigned in equal numbers to three groups (2 rats/replicate and 4 replicates/group). The feed rations provided to all three groups contained high levels of proteins, which were soybean meal, corn gluten and wheat gluten in the control, corn and wheat groups, respectively. The in Control, Corn and Wheat groups serum IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha levels respectively 55.83 - 46.37; 81.65 - 61.95 and 81.65-61.31 was determined but these differences were statistically insignificant. Furthermore, immunohistochemical examination demonstrated a mathematical increase to have occurred in the distribution of the CD3 and CD8 receptors in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples of the corn and wheat groups. In result, based on the findings obtained in this study, we suggest that the long-term feeding of rats on high levels of gluten causes systemic adverse effects.

AIMS: Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is one of the most important causes of acute kidney injury (AKI), a clinical syndrome with kidney dysfunction and high mortality rates. New diagnostic biomarkers need to be defined to better illuminate the pathophysiology of AKI. For the first time, we aim to investigate the protective effects of Curcumin which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and 12/15 lipoxygenase inhibitor LOXblock-1 on I/R induced AKI by modulating inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, apoptosis and semaphorin-plexin pathway. MAIN METHODS: The rats were divided into five groups, with eight animals per group: Sham, I/R, I/R + DMSO (1%, i.p.), I/R + Curcumin (100 mg/kg, i.p.), I/R + LOXblock-1 (2 µg/kg, i.p.). KEY FINDINGS: The renal function biomarkers (BUN, CREA and UA) in serum were significantly increased in the I/R group. The inflammatory (TNF-α, IL-6 and MCP-1), apoptotic (CYCS and CASP3) and oxidative stress parameters (MDA, MPO, TAS and TOS) measured by ELISA were significantly increased in the I/R group. In histopathological analysis, it was observed that I/R caused serious damage to kidney tissue. SEMA3A was found to increase both serum level and mRNA expression in I/R group. It was observed that curcumin and LOXblock-1 reduce inflammatory processes, oxidative stress and apoptosis via the semaphorin-plexin pathway by both measurements and histopathological analysis. Curcumin was proved more effective than LOXblock-1 with its antioxidant feature in I/R injury. SIGNIFICANCE: The current study reveals the protective effects of Curcumin and LOXblock-1 on acute kidney injury by suppressing SEMA3A as a new biomarker.

This study was aimed at determining the effects of corn and wheat gluten, used as dietary protein sources, on live weight gain, sperm quality and the histology of the testes and accessory glands in male rats. For this purpose, 20-day-old 24 male Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to three groups. Group 1 (Control), Group 2 and Group 3 were fed on a basal ration supplemented with high levels of soybean meal, corn gluten and wheat gluten, respectively, as a protein source. At the end of the study, when compared to Group 1, live weight values were determined to have increased in Group 3 and to have decreased in Group 2 (p < .05). Furthermore, sperm density, sperm motility, the dead/ live sperm ratio and testes weight were determined to have significantly decreased in Group 2, in comparison to Groups 1 and 3 (p < .05). The percentages of abnormal spermatozoon, and head, acrosome, mid-piece and tail abnormalities were high in Group 2 (p < .05). Histological examination demonstrated that, in Group 2, the diameter of the Tubulus Seminiferous Contortus (TSC) and the size of the Tubular Epithelial Cells (TE) were small, and the tubular and anatomical structure of the testes were shrunken and altered. Group 2 also presented with connective tissue increase and alveolar lumen enlargement in the prostate gland, and with connective tissue thickening, muscle tissue increase and secretory capacity decrease in the seminal vesicle (p < .05). Moreover, in Group 2, the Gl. Bulbourethral (Cowper's gland) presented with a decreased size and dilatations in the mucous structures. In a result, based on the findings obtained in this study, it is suggested that high levels of dietary corn gluten adversely affect live weight, sperm quality, and the testes and accessory glands.

This study was planned to determine the histochemical alterations of the submandibular gland by implantation of long-term GnRH (deslorelin 4.7 mg). Eighteen Wistar albino rats were used in the study. Alcian blue (AB; pH: 2.5), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining was performed to determine the microscopic structure and histochemical structure of the GI submandibular gland. The Avidin-Biotin Complex (ABC) method was used to determine the immunohistochemical reactivity of lectin. After GnRH implantation, the organs were examined and atrophies were observed in organs. In the group in which the implants were removed, it was determined that there was no atrophy; organ structures and microscopic examination were similar to the control group. At the end of the study, submandibular gland was fixed in 10 % buffered formaldehyde. In three groups, PAS and AB histochemical staining revealed similar reactions. Immunohistochemically, lectin activity was found to react positively.


Este estudio se planificó para determinar las alteraciones histoquímicas de la glándula submandibular mediante la implantación de GnRH a largo plazo (deslorelina 4,7 mg). Dieciocho ratas Wistar albinas se utilizaron en el estudio. Para determinar la estructura microscópica e histoquímica de la glándula submandibular, se realizó una tinción con azul alcián (AA; pH: 2.5) y ácido peryódico de Schiff (PAS). El método Avidin-Biotin Complex (ABC) se utilizó para determinar la reactividad inmunohistoquímica de la lectina. Después de la implantación de GnRH, se examinaron los órganos y se observó atrofia en ellos. En el grupo en el que se retiraron los implantes, no se observó atrofia. Las estructuras orgánicas y el examen microscópico fueron similares al grupo control. Al final del estudio, la glándula submandibular se fijó en formaldehído tamponado al 10 %. En tres grupos, la tinción histoquímica de PAS y AA reveló reacciones simila4res. Inmunohisto-químicamente, se encontró que la actividad de la lectina reaccionó positivamente.

BACKGROUND: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a well-known alkylating anticancer agent used in the treatment of various malignant and non-malignant tumors. CP may also cause a variety of adverse effects, including reproductive toxicity. Amifostine is known as a cytoprotective drug having antioxidant properties. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possible beneficial effects of amifostine on testicular toxicity induced by CP in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this experimental study. The CP group animals received a single dose of 200 mg/kg CP on Day 8 by intraperitoneal injection and were left untreated for the following seven days. The two remaining groups of animals were treated with 200 mg/kg/day amifostine (AMF 200) and 400 mg/kg/day amifostine (AMF 400) for seven days prior to and following a single intraperitoneal injection of CP. Morphometrical analysis and histological examination of testicular tissue were performed. Serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone levels were measured in serum using commercial ELISA kits. The epidydimal sperm count was determined. RESULTS: The tubular epithelial height in the testis was significantly higher in the AMF400 group compared to other groups (p < 0.001). Animals in the AMF400 group showed minimal debris in the tubules, no Sertoli cell damage, and the Johnsen scores were slightly higher in the AMF400 group. The epididymal sperm count was significantly lower in the CP-administered animals compared to the control animals and was significantly higher in the AMF200 and AMF400 groups compared to the CP group (p = 0.006, and p = 0.019 respectively). CONCLUSION: Amifostine, at a dose of 400 mg/kg, may have a protective effect on testicular damage induced by CP in rats.

The neurotoxic effects of aluminum are generally associated with reduced antioxidant capacity, increased oxidative stress and apoptosis, which lead to the induction of neurodegenerative processes. Curcumin has a lipophilic polyphenol character and effects of antioxidant and anti-apoptotic. The present study was undertaken to examine possible aluminum exposure in rats brain synaptosomes and to investigate whether protective and therapeutic effects of curcumin on biochemical and morphological changes in both pre- and post-treated groups. Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) at 50 µM concentration and curcumin at 5 and 10 µg/mL doses were applied to hippocampal synaptosomes of rats according to experimental design. Biochemical effects were evaluated by MTT cytotoxicity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, nitric oxide (NO) levels, glutathione (GSH) levels, caspase 3 activities, cytochrome c levels, DNA fragmentation values and protein levels. Morphological examinations were done by TEM analysis. AlCI3 exposure in the synaptosomes enhanced oxidative stress, triggered apoptosis and caused ultrastructural alterations which were well reflected in the TEM images. Curcumin pre-treatment slightly ameliorated the MDA levels, NO levels, cytochrome c levels and caspase 3 activities in AlCI3-exposed synaptosomes, but these results were not statistically significant. Furthermore, curcumin post-treatment significantly improved oxidative damage and morphological alterations, and suppressed cytochrome c and caspase 3 activities. Taken together, our data showed that curcumin had more therapeutic effects than protective effects in AlCI3-induced neurotoxicity. Nevertheless, the therapeutic (post-protective) effects of curcumin should be further investigated in in vivo neurodegenerative models involving behavioral tests.

The objective of the present was to determine the effect of long-term release GnRH agonists "deslorelin" on suppression and restoration of testicular and accessory sex glands functions, and expression of HSP in testes of adult male rats. A group of twenty-eight male rats and fifty-six female rats were kept for eleven months. The male rats were subdivided into treatment (n = 18; deslorelin, an analogue of GnRH, 4.7 mg, S.C; six months) and control (n = 10; untreated), and the adult female rats were introduced with either treatment or control male rats at the 2nd, 6th and 11th months post implant insertion. At 6th month of deslorelin implants insertion, six male rats from treatment and five rats from control group were sacrificed. The remaining (twelve treatment and five control) male rats were sacrificed at 11 months. The testicular dimension were measured monthly in both treatment and control rats. The blood samples were collected for testosterone and HSP70 antibody, whereas, the testes and accessory glands were isolated for histological examination at each sacrificial time. The results showed that testicular dimension were significantly lesser in treatment group until 9 months post treatment. HSP70 protein expression was negligible at 6 months in treatment group but its intensity increased in spermatids 11 months of treatment similar to control group. Significantly lower testosterone concentrations with poor semen quality, and smaller litter size were observed in treatment group. The histological picture of accessory sex glands and seminiferous tubules shown a variable integrity in treatment group than control at 6 months implant insertion. In conclusion, the subcutaneous application of 4.7 mg of the GnRH-analogue deslorelin represents a practicable, like in the female rats, method to suppress testicular, accessory sex glands functions, testicular HSP expression and fertility in male rats. Moreover, the suppressive effects of deslorelin, continued until 11th months after removal of the implant.

The aim of the research was to investigate the morphological and histological structure of the Anatolian bobcat (Lynx lynx) hard palate using light and scanning electron microscopy, in addition to gross examination. The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Work (Sivas Branch) provided three female Anatolian bobcat cadavers. The Anatolian bobcat hard palate consists of a narrow, rough part in the rostral region (including the incisive papilla, palatine ridges, and palatine raphe) and a wide, smooth part in the caudal part region. The gross examination revealed that the incisive papilla is small and shaped like a carboy icon, the primary and secondary palatine ridges have a serrated appearance, and the palatine raphe forms a single longitudinal row of conical papillae and a single transverse row of conical papillae (in the transverse groove that separates the two palatine ridges). In addition, the microscopy examination revealed microplicae in the epithelium, as well as abundant connective-tissue bundles running in various directions in the lamina propria and submucosa layer. These adaptations of the hard palate structures may increase efficiency during ingestion and help direct food backwards. This is the first study to provide detailed morphological and histological descriptions of the Anatolian bobcat hard palate.

This study was aimed to search the effect of wheatgrass on the Total Antioxidan (TAS)-Oxidan Status (TOS) and DNA damage in rat with diabetes. The rats used in the study were randomly divided into 4 groups that each of has 10 rats: Control group; 1 ml single dose phosphate-citrate buffer injected i.p (pH: 4.5), Diabetes group; 45 mg/kg single dose streptozotocin injected i.p., Wheatgrass group; was given oral wheatgrass (10 ml/kg/day) for 6 weeks, Diabetes +Wheatgrass group; 45 mg/kg single dose streptozotocin injected i.p. and wheatgrass (10 ml/kg/day) was given by oral during 6 weeks. After the process of experiment during 6 weeks, blood sample and pancreas tissue were taken. The analysis were done of blood glucose levels, TAS, TOS levels by colorimetric kits; DNA damage by ELISA kits in serum. The pancreas tissues were examined histopathologically. In the group of Diabetes+Wheatgrass was determined that the levels of glucose levels (p<0.001), TOS (p<0.05) and OSI (p<0.01) statistically decreased and heal histopatolojical compared to diabetes group. In the group of Wheatgrass was determined that the levels of TAS p<0.05 statistically increased from other groups. The statistical significance were not found in the level of serum 8OHdG differences between the groups. The beta cells were seen to increase in the group receiving wheatgrass for therapeutic purposes.As a conclusion, it was determined that wheatgrass strengthened the anti-oxidant defense system and reduced the glucose level in diabetic rats.


El objetivo de este estudio fue buscar el efecto del pasto de trigo sobre el estado total de antioxidantes (TAS) -Oxidan Status (TOS) y el daño del ADN en ratas con diabetes. Las ratas analizadas en el estudio se dividieron aleatoriamente en 4 grupos de 10 ejemplares cada uno: grupo control; 1 ml de tampón fosfato-citrato de dosis única inyectado i.p. (pH: 4,5)., Grupo diabetes; 45 mg / kg de estreptozotocina en dosis única inyectada i.p., grupo pasto de trigo; se administró pasto de trigo oral (10 ml / kg / día) durante 6 semanas, grupo diabetes + pasto de trigo; 45 mg / kg de estreptozotocina en dosis única inyectada i.p. y pasto de trigo (10 ml / kg / día) por vía oral durante 6 semanas. Después del proceso experimental durante 6 semanas, se tomaron muestras de sangre y tejido de páncreas. Se midieron los niveles de glucosa en sangre, TAS, y TOS mediante kits colorimétricos; El daño al ADN fue realizado por kits de ELISA en suero. Los tejidos del páncreas se examinaron histopatológicamente. En el grupo de diabetes + pasto de trigo se determinó que los niveles de glucosa (p <0,001), TOS (p <0,05) y OSI (p <0,01) disminuyeron estadísticamente y curaron histopatológicamente en comparación con el grupo de diabetes. En el grupo de pasto de trigo se determinó que los niveles de TAS p <0,05 se incrementaron estadísticamente con respecto a otros grupos. No fue estadísticamente significativo el nivel de las diferencias séricas de 8OHdG entre los grupos. Se observó que las células beta aumentaron en el grupo que recibió pasto de trigo con fines terapéuticos. Como conclusión, se determinó que el pasto de trigo fortaleció el sistema de defensa antioxidante y redujo el nivel de glucosa en las ratas diabéticas.

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a common anticancer drug, but its use in cancer treatment is limited due to its severe toxicities induced mainly by oxidative stress in normal cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) lead to multiple organ injuries, including the kidneys. Selenium (Se) is a nutritionally essential trace element with antioxidant properties. In the present study, the possible protective effect of Se on CP-induced acute nephrotoxicity was investigated. Forty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into six groups of seven rats in each. The control group received saline, and other groups were injected with CP (150 mg/kg), Se (0.5 or 1 mg/kg), or CP + Se intraperitoneally. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant state (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), creatinine, and cystatin C (Cys C) levels were measured in the sera. In addition, kidney tissues were examined histologically. In the CP alone treated rats, creatinine, Cys C, TOS, and OSI levels increased, while TAC level decreased. CP-induced histological damages were decreased by co-treatment of Se and biochemical results supported the microscopic observations. In conclusion, our study points to the therapeutic potential of Se and indicates a significant role of ROS in CP-induced kidney toxicity.

OBJECTIVES: In chronic kidney disease, both bleeding and thrombotic complications are observed, although with expected recovery after a successful transplant. Adiponectin has protective properties with respect to atherogenesis and inflammation. Plasma adiponectin levels are markedly elevated among patients with end-stage renal disease and are lower after kidney transplant. However, this topic is still debated in the literature. Here, we evaluated the effect of transplant on platelet function markers (P-selectin and platelet aggregation) and adiponectin in renal transplant patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study included 14 renal transplant patients. Preoperative and week 1, month 1, month 6, year 1, and year 2 samples after transplant were studied. In addition to plasma adiponectin, P-selectin levels, and platelet aggregation tests, biochemical tests and coagulation parameters were also studied. RESULTS: We observed a significant decrease in adiponectin levels 2 years after transplant. Platelet function tests with ADP and collagen were significantly improved, and no changes in P-selectin, ristocetin, and epinephrine levels were observed. CONCLUSIONS: According to our findings, glomerular filtration rate has an important effect on platelet function, but adiponectin levels became normal only in the second year after transplant. Late improvement of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and adiponectin after transplant suggested to us that patients with kidney transplant may still have risk of cardiovascular events, especially in the first years.

This study was conducted to reveal the morphometric and morphological features of foot pads in the Anatolian bobcat (Lynx lynx). To achieve this objective, dissection, histological, and radiography techniques were applied to two dead materials obtained from the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Forest and Water Works Sivas Branch Manager. Digit I is radiographically rudimentary in the forepaw. The paws of the forelimb of the Anatolian bobcat have a carpal, a metacarpal, and four digital pads, while the hind feet have a metatarsal pad and four digital pads. The metacarpal pad is cone-like, while the metatarsal pad resembles a butterfly. The digital pads in the paws of the forelimb are longer and thinner than in the paws in the hind feet. The paws in both feet are situated as binary. Through histological examination, it was determined that the skin of the foot pads consists of epidermis, dermis, and pad cushion. The epidermis is subdivided into basal, spinous, granular, lucidum, and corneum layers. Disruption of nocturnal sleep in an intensive care unit may remarkably affect production of melatonin, which is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of sleep quality on melatonin levels and inflammation after surgery. Thus, we compared the patients, who were screened in the side-rooms where the lights were dimmed and noise levels were reduced, with the patients who received usual care. Preoperative and postoperative urine 6-sulphatoxymelatonin, serum interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and c-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured and data on sleep quality was collected using the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. Postoperative CRP and IL-6 levels were greater in the control group than in the experimental group, whereas postoperative 24 h melatonin levels were greater than preoperative levels and the difference was steeper in the experimental group in concordance with sleep quality scores. Thus, the regulation of light and noise in ICUs may help the recovery after major surgeries in patients, potentially by increasing melatonin production, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of klotho gene and ß-glucuronidase activity on stone formation in patients with urinary tract stone disease (UTSD). METHODS: A total of 103 patients with UTSD and 102 controls with no specific urolithiasis history were enrolled into the study. G395A and C1818T polymorphisms of klotho gene were analyzed with PCR method. Serum levels of calcium and phosphorus and 24-h urine levels of ß-glucuronidase activity, calcium and phosphorus levels were measured biochemically. RESULTS: A total of 103 of patients were male (50.2 %) and 102 were female (49.8 %) (p 0.945). Twenty-four-hour urine levels of calcium were significantly higher in UTSD group, whereas no difference was observed in phosphorus levels (p < 0.001, p 0.074, respectively). As for the G395A polymorphism, type of GG was significantly higher in the patient group compared to the controls (p = 0.02), while GA genotype was significantly higher in the controls (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in F352V and C1818T polymorphism between the patient and control groups. ß-glucuronidase activity was slightly lower in the patient group without significance (p 0.932).When patients with GG genotype and the rest were compared, there were no significant difference in all parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Any polymorphism altering the function of klotho gene may result with stone formation. We found that there are more GG sequences of G395A gene in patients with UTSD. That may be a polymorphism of klotho gene which results with stone formation. Further studies with more patients should be accomplished which are combining the genetic and epigenetic factors associated with urolithiasis and klotho gene to enlighten the etiology of this disease.
